Mission Accomplished!

I remember looking at Ringling College more than 4 years ago, so amazed by the work in their view book, the stories from Alumni, and I can't believe how far I have come since then! I never in a million years thought I would make it to where I am today. I am finishing up the fall semester of my senior year and I never expected my work would be as strong and creative as it has become, or that I would find a third home (after Orlando and Richmond of course) here in Sarasota.

I am really excited to be bringing you todays post, as I have poured all of my blood, sweat, and tears into this project (and no, I am NOT exaggerating, 48 hours ago I had an emotional breakdown and was convinced that I hated my project, I have a few paper cuts and xacto blade stabs to show for it, and could probably use a nice warm bath) but to say the least, it's almost over!

I feel so great to have this project completed, I am headed home for a much needed, and totally deserved sleep coma for the next 6 hours.

Here is my social justice capstone project. Thank you all for taking the time to stop by from time to time, it means more to me than you can begin to comprehend!

Please, take a moment to enjoy, and feel free to let me know what you think!

Hello!

Happy Tuesday morning!

Project Update:
I spent all of yesterday hunched over 3DS Max, and worked really hard on getting my restaurant to look and feel the way It does in my mind.

Here is a perspective of the restaurant overall. Let me know what you think!

Process. No judgement

In the midst of this project, and I thought I would share a small look at how it's going. A lot in this picture will change between now and December, but at least it's going somewhere these days!

In progress

So it is late, I am still awake, (surprise surprise, welcome to the life of a college design student!) and I have a deadline to meet by noon tomorrow.

I figured I would share a little something for those of you night owls like myself! I haven't posted my floor plan for Mosaiek yet, so I thought I would do so now!

Here are a few pages of my Construction Document set that will accompany my Capstone project.
Enjoy!

Mosaiek

Branding! Finally found the inspiration to get it done :)

I think I am going for a Mediterranean/Japanese Fusion restaurant. Very exciting!

The top image is just a "motif," and will not be posted above the name. (just so I don't throw you off!)

Opinions?

So Long Citreae...

I spent the weekend resting and relaxing after a long week of mid-terms, and I decided, after a brief discussion with my instructor, that Citreae, and the citrus concept was a dead end street. I believe that I can do so much more than what my previous concept communicated with me.

Old concept aside, the rest of this project is going to be more conceptual than my previous work, I want it to be full of color, and shapes, and positive/negative space. It is all about natural structures and forms, the examination of nature's patterns, and being inspired to solve human problems with these elements: Biomimicry. Here are some inspirational pieces and photographs that inspired me to make the leap.

Now I just need a name...

Add Image
Spent the whole day in the labs re-assigning materials to my project. I feel (and agree with others) that the green color in the last few process images is overpowering, and overused (within all my projects) So its all sunsine and Orange Juice for this project from here on out!

Thinking in 3D

Spent a few days over the last few weeks working in Sketch Up to produce a pretty accurate 3d sketch. Working in three dimensions helps me come up with new ways to apply materials, and it helps me see the big picture as well as the tiny details.

Here is a sketch that helps me see the various possible color applications, furniture selections, and space planning options.

Again, this is JUST a sketch, so things will change between now and December. Thoughts?

The sketching begins...

I have started to develop an idea of what the interior of the space will look like. I like the idea of doing something rich and eclectic, but still fresh and full of conversation. These beginning stages are the best, and very exciting! I completed this in Google Sketch Up as well, just as another exorcise within the program, and I like the way it turned out! This is just a quick sketch to show some of my ideas for materials, and their application. yay for stone and reclaimed wood!

More to come! It's technically my Friday, so have a great weekend everyone! :)

Stacking Diagram

This diagram shows how each of the 3 different floors interact, with consideration to emergency stairwells, and the first floor restaurant in relation to the mezzanine. I have been learning Google Sketch up, and this was one of the first things I did with the program. It's a really great way to explain how the building works.

Restaurant Name and Concept

Inspired by fresh fruit and a variety of zesty seasonings, the concept for Union Mission’s residential, educational, and dining program in Sarasota, Florida is warm citrus spice. By providing guests with an inviting, comfortable, and intimate ambiance, they can experience the night of a lifetime, without feeling too far from the comforts of home. Surrounded by vibrant colors, flavors and an eclectic atmosphere, guests will be inspired to spice things up, and try something new! The concept will be expressed through the elements of space, texture, and color, as well as the principles of rhythm, variety, and movement.

Capstone Project

I can't believe it is almost mid-terms again! Senior year is here, and I can't believe that either! Part of me is in disbelief that I am almost done with school. It's a pretty exciting and invigorating thought, I am pretty ready to do big things in the design world!

We are working on our Capstone Project, a socially responsible project for Union Mission, a organization that provides living and working opportunities for those in the community that are at risk for homelessness. We have been asked to design a residence, office space and learning center/teaching kitchen for the members of the program that will prepare them for the work in the restaurant downstairs.

This is a 3 story project, and will take up all of Fall semester. I am really happy about what I have planned for this one!

I'll post some process work as it develops, so keep checking back!

Getting the word out there!

This has nothing to do with my work, me, or design, but it has everything to do with raising awareness about something beautiful!

Lighting Design

My Submission for the Robert Bruce Thompson Annual Student Light Fixture Design Competition. You can check out the winners from previous years here: http://www.rbtcompetition.org/

Some of the past winners are pretty cool, and a lot of them come from Ringling, so I am pretty excited to find out who takes home this years prize!

The design problem was to design a porch light to illuminate the front door of a single family residence. Here is my solution: (Click to enlarge)
